2019 South Africa – Sweden Research & Innovation Week, 6 - 10 May 2019, South Africa

With more than 30 events taking place in 12 cities across South Africa, the 1st South Africa –Sweden Research & Innovation Week brought together almost 1200 participants from Sweden and South Africa to discuss mutual solutions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A delegation of 132 Swedish researchers, together with representatives of university management and funding agencies, took part in activities ranging from workshops with Swedish industry, research seminars across South Africa to alumni receptions in both Pretoria and Cape town.

The South Africa – Sweden Research & Innovation week is organized as a part of the South Africa – Sweden University Forum (SASUF) which is a collaboration project between 40 universities in both countries. The project runs from 2017‐2020 and is funded by the participating universities, the Swedish  Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT), the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Department of Higher Education & Training (DHET) in South Africa.

The Research & Innovation Week is organized around the following Challenges:

1. Climate change, natural resources and sustainability
2. Education for a Sustainable Society
3. Social transformation through change: Development strategies for society
4. Understanding the burden of disease in Sweden and South Africa
5. Urbanisation and cities in the 21st Century
6. Digital technologies, big data and cybersecurity

The week in 2018 was organized with the help from: Swedish Institute (SI), Business Sweden, Swedish Embassy in South Africa, South African Embassy in Sweden, Young Academy of Sweden, Young Academy of South Africa & ABB.

NEXT STEPS
The 2nd South Africa – Sweden Research & Innovation Week will take place during May 6‐10 2019.

The week in South Africa will feature events linked to research, education and innovation and a delegation from Sweden of approximately 250 persons is expected to take part in the activities.

The program for the week is still being planned and actors with an interests in research, innovation or collaboration between Sweden and South Africa are encouraged to take part in or organize events during the week.
