This Request for Applications (RFA) is an open call targeted at Women researchers engaged in health research from all recognised South African research institutions for the establishment of new SAMRC Extra Mural Research Units (EMUs). These new Units will be approved for funding if they meet specific criteria, e.g. to provide scientific leadership in key research areas, or to research important research questions where the need cannot easily be addressed through short-term grants. A maximum of three (3) EMUs will be awarded to successful applicants.
The funding for the SAMRC EMUs represents a secure, discretionary, financial incentive which is approved in 5-year cycles, for a maximum of 15-years depending on performance, and should facilitate efforts to leverage external research funding. It is expected that institutional co-funding and the sum of external grants should exceed the amount invested in the Unit by the SAMRC by several-fold. Becoming an SAMRC EMU, also provides research institutions with the opportunity to contribute to the development of the next generation of research leaders.
This is a two-stage application process. The first stage will invite researchers to submit an Expression of Interest application, and the second stage will require submission of a Full Research Proposal by applicants who will be successful in the first round.
All applications must be submitted on a template provided by the SAMRC.
