The South African Medical Research Council’s Burden of Disease Research Unit seeks to appoint an experienced Senior Scientist (Seasoned). The post, based in Cape Town (Head office), will be responsible for overseeing proper administration of the Strengthening Health System’s Capacity for Linkage to Care (SHeS’Cap) for AGYW and men project in the uMgungundlovu district, KZN.

The aim of this multi-year project is to conduct implementation science to evaluate and promote the systematic uptake of evidence-based practices for improving linkage to care among AGYW and men into the health service and to strengthen the availability of pertinent health information required to improve linkage to care at the district level.

Responsibilities: Core Requirements:
  • Contribute towards planning, tracking and implementing the Strengthening Health System’s Capacity for Linkage to Care for AGYW and Men (SHeS’Cap) study
  • Manage scientific initiatives and co-ordinate projects
  • Undertake statistical analysis and report to project team
  • Consolidate and contribute towards science outcomes (publications, research proposals and writing grants/sourcing for funding) and present research results at scientific conferences and scientific or collaborators’ meetings
  • Be familiar with all the policies and procedures related to the project
  • Master’s degree in Health Sciences, Public Health, Health Information Systems, Health Informatics or a related field
  • At least five (5) years’ experience post qualification, in Public Health Research, Health Systems Research, Health Information Systems, HIV Prevention, with experience in multi-disciplinary collaborations; with a minimum of 2-3 years senior research and management experience in a research institution or a university
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Should be enrolled for a PhD in a topic relevant to this post
  • Experience in design, implementation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of Health Systems Research
  • Experience in writing scientific reports and other forms of knowledge translation
  • An understanding of South African health care services and clinical aspects of HIV care
  • Proficiency in a quantitative or qualitative analysis package (e.g. STATA, Atlas.ti) and understanding of basic qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • A track record in undertaking and initiating original research and in publishing in accredited journals
  • At least one first author manuscript published in an ISI-accredited journal with a 2nd first author article in draft
  • Experience with capacity development – either Masters supervision or teaching
  • Valid unendorsed code 8 driver’s license


  • Advance working knowledge in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
  • Fluency in English
  • Professional written communication and presentation skills
  • Relevant workplace numeric and multiple project management ability
  • Advanced analytical ability and problem solving acumen
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office packages and project management tools
  • Pro-active, self-motivated, energetic, flexible, adaptive and innovative
  • Ability to work independently whilst still working effectively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team especially over periods of irregular hours.

A salary in the region of R749 401 per annum, total cost-to-company.
