Ms. Nonhlakanipho F. Sangweni

Nonhlakanipho holds an MSc degree in Biochemistry which she obtained from the University of Zululand where she was funded by the SAMRC RCD. She is now a second year PhD student registered at Stellenbosch University for a degree in Medical Physiology and is based at the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform. She currently has four publications and has two more that are under review, and she  has successfully applied for the NOVARTIS Developmental Grant in collaboration with the SAMRC, Medicines for Malaria Venture and the Department of Science and Technology. She is also involved in capacity development where she co-supervises an Honours student.

Ms. Sangweni and her supervisor Dr Rabia Johnson have collaborated with BioPharm which is a company that has patented three (3) novel anti-cancer agents. This partnership focuses on investigating the bioactive compounds of the patented agents as possible adjuncts to current chemotherapeutic regimens with the intention of protecting the cardiac muscle. Ms. Sangweni has recently presented her PhD findings at the BRIP’s symposium (2019) where she demonstrated the cardioprotective properties of these agents and won 1st PhD prize as well as Best overall presentation.

She is currently working on her 1st PhD research paper which is scheduled to be submitted next month.
