The Medical Device and Diagnostic Innovation Cluster (MeDDIC) is hosted by the SAMRC under the Global Health Innovation Accelerator (GHIA) program and is a national initiative created to exploit a high concentration of skills, expertise, infrastructure and companies across South Africa within the medical devices field. The initiative, supported by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), is aimed at stimulating and intensifying technology innovation within the sector as well as encouraging an integrated ecosystem in support of increasing the competitiveness of the industry.
MeDDIC aims to facilitate the localization of high quality, competitively priced medical devices and diagnostics to enable the increased procurement of locally produced products that address key health priorities in the country. MeDDIC strives to change the paradigms of product development and geographic rollout by facilitating local product development, manufacture and procurement to potentially reduce the costs of healthcare while stimulating local job creation and economic development. This call is one such instrument that aims to bridge the gap between innovation, product development and roll-out and move more locally created products through to the market.
