Scope and Aim

The SAMRC aims to utilize the test kits to support various projects in the country, such as COVID- 19 vaccine studies and various COVID-19 surveillance studies. The tests will be provided free of charge to researchers and public institutions to utilize strictly in accordance with the conditions described in the South African National Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) regulatory requirements for the use of SARS-CoV-2 tests, obtainable from the SAHPRA website. The tests are limited for use under the national testing protocol only, and testing for specific COVID-19 antibodies is recommended for the following purposes:

  • To supplement nucleic acid (e.g. PCR) testing for the diagnosis of suspected COVID-19
  • To identify recent or remote past SARS-CoV-2 infections
  • Targeted cohort surveillance
  • Community screening, specifically for serosurveys or hot spot tracing
  • Population-level epidemiologic studies and surveillance programmes
  • As part of scientific research studies

Who Can Participate and How

The offer is open to any researcher at a recognised research or public institution. No limit is imposed on the number of expressions of interest that a host institution can submit; however, no researcher or group can submit more than one application.

Interested researchers and institutions are invited to submit a brief but sufficiently detailed expression of interest that outlines the purpose for which the tests will be utilized, the number of tests required, the expected outcomes, and an undertaking that the requestor has the capacity and means to utilize the tests before the expiry date of April 2022.
