The South African Medical Research Council’s Division of Research Capacity Development (RCD) invites applications from individuals who have obtained their Doctoral degrees not more than 5 years from the date of application. We are looking to fund three (3) Postdoctoral Fellows who are immediately available to start working on projects in the following research areas and Units.

  1. Non-Communicable Disease (Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform)
  2. Alcohol and drug abuse (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit)
  3. COVID-19 (Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform)

The Aim of the Award
The purpose of the Intra-mural Postdoctoral Fellowship is to contribute and assist in accelerating research capacity development and scientific leadership by creating opportunities to host and retain postdoctoral scientists that have demonstrated the potential to become established researchers. Postdoctoral fellows play a crucial role in strengthening the research team and student supervision.

Value and Duration of the Award
The value of the award is R350 000.00 (Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Rand) (tax-free funding) per year for three financial years to be utilized as a Postdoctoral Fellowship.  The hosting Research Unit will engage with the successful applicant regarding the career development goals and the remuneration amount to a level commensurate with the Fellow’s experience and qualifications.

The period for the award is three (3) years with the option to extend for a further two years subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. Funding for each financial year will be subject to receipt of satisfactory progress reports and the availability of funding for the programme.

The hosting Unit Director and/or Principal Investigator (mentor) shall also provide the necessary research running expenses, infrastructure, career development, and mentorship.

Obligations of the Postdoctoral Fellow
The Fellow shall act as a researcher on the project that he/she applies for and will spend a minimum of 80% on the project. The Fellow will negotiate a performance contract with his/her supervisor.

Eligibility

The following eligibility criteria are applicable for this request for application:

  • Only bona-fide South African citizens and permanent residents may apply.
  • To be appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow, the individual must have obtained the doctoral degree no more than five (5) years before applying for the Fellowship.
    • Candidates who have recently passed their doctoral degree but are still waiting for graduation need a strong motivation and support from the hosting Unit Director.
    • Motivation from female candidates who are returning after a period of absence from research due to family responsibilities may be considered.
  • Applicants must be younger than 40 years, candidates older than 40 years need a motivation from the hosting Unit Directors.
  • Preference will be given to young black female candidates and the historically disadvantaged groups. Graduates from previously under-resourced universities and designated population groups will receive first consideration. For this reason, we require race, and gender to be specified.
  • Disabled individuals are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Full-time employees of the SAMRC may not hold the SAMRC Intra-mural Postdoctoral Programme award.

The South African Medical Research Council reserves the right to disqualify ineligible, incomplete and/or inappropriate applications, change the conditions of award, extend the closing date or to make no awards at all.
