SAMRC celebrates International Mandela Day 2023 with “Jars of Hope”

Mandela Day

International Mandela Day is a global observance celebrated on July 18th each year to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and renowned anti-apartheid leader. July 18 is Mandela’s birthday and he would be turning 105 today.

In celebration of his birthday, the United Nation declared July 18 an International Mandela day to serve as a call to action for individuals to make a positive difference in their communities and promote peace, reconciliation, and humanitarian efforts.

This year, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) commemorated the day with the “Jars of Hope” campaign, where jars containing ingredients that can be used to make soup were collected across all our campuses, these jars will be distributed within our surrounding communities.

On behalf of the SAMRC, we would like to thank all our staff who contributed to making this campaign a success and in doing our bit to give back to the community and to those less fortunate as we continue to improve the health of the people in our beautiful rainbow nation.
