Dr Nolonwabo Nontongana obtained her PhD at the University of Fort Hare, working on “Appraisal of Wastewater Final Effluents as reservoirs of cholera and non-cholera causing Vibrio species: A case study of the Amatole District Municipality.” This research was part of an umbrella study under the Water Research Commission (WRC), which sought to evaluate the imprints of cholera pathogens in wastewater, river water, aquatic animals, and vegetables around the Eastern Cape Province. A manual for the monitoring of cholera and non-cholera-causing Vibrio pathogens in water, vegetables, and aquatic animals has been published from this research. Dr Nontongana has authored and co-authored papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at local and international conferences. She is currently a lecturer in Microbiology and the Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Fort Hare. Her current research focuses on microorganisms of great importance in zoonotic disease, specifically emphasizing "One Health" and antimicrobial resistance determinants of pathogens relevant to poultry, swine, and cattle dairy farms in Buffalo City Metropolitan, Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipalities. She has served as the HOD in the Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology (2020 - 2022). She is currently the Deputy Director of the SAMRC: Microbial Water Quality and Monitoring at the University of Fort Hare.
