The SAMRC/SMU Public Health Intervention, Innovation, and Implementation Research Unit (PHIRu) host multidisciplinary research groups that are dedicated to advance evidence-based, context-responsive interventions that improve population health outcomes and strengthen health systems.
The unit plays a critical role in bridging the gap between research and real-world application by ensuring that scientific discoveries translate into practical, sustainable solutions.
PHIRu’s approach is co-creation, bringing together communities, policymakers, researchers, and industry partners to design culturally relevant health interventions that are both scalable and responsive to local needs. At PHIRu, we align our work with South Africa’s national health priorities and global health agendas focused on equity, innovation, and sustainable development.
