Anthony (Tony) Figaji is the Professor and Head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Cape Town and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. He is also director of the research group, African Brain Child (ABC), an interdisciplinary and diverse group of researchers and clinical specialists who study the childhood brain. Prof Figaji has an international reputation for clinical expertise as a paediatric neurosurgeon, especially with advanced brain monitoring and surgery for children with brain tumours, but equally as a researcher driving innovative translational approaches to understand and treat the developing brain. He has a strong national and international leadership record, including as President of the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa, the National Research Foundation (SARChI) Chair of Clinical Neurosciences, President of the International Neurotrauma Society, and President of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is a Fellow of the University of Cape Town, a member of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa, and a recipient of the prestigious Wellcome Trust Discovery Award and the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship award. African Brain Child won the 2024 Science Team of The Year Award. Their work is divided across two campuses, the Neurosciences Institute at the University of Cape Town, and the world-renowned Red Cross Children’s Hospital. He believes passionately that the combination of science and clinical healthcare is exponentially greater than the sum of their parts and offers exceptional opportunities to impact our communities, develop emerging scientists, and lead from Africa.
