Prof Anthony Okoh holds a PhD degree in Microbiology as well as 10 other diplomas and certificates from some reputable institutions on the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. He served as Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) from 2009 to 2015. He is currently the Leader of the Water Research Niche Area of the university; Director, SAMRC Microbial Water Quality Monitoring Centre; and the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and Agriculture in the same University. His research interests falls within the aegis of Applied and Environmental Microbiology including water/wastewater quality, emerging pollutants, reservoirs of antibiotic resistance and bioactive compounds of health and biotechnological importance. Prof Okoh has attracted huge research fundings from national and international agencies and runs one of the biggest research groups in South Africa. He represented South Africa in the international collaboration on the Surveillance of Reservoirs of Antibiotic Resistance (ISRAR) under the auspices of the Alliance for the Prudent use of Antibiotics (APUA) with headquarters in the Boston, USA; and he doubled as the South Africa Country Laboratory Manager in the project. In 2016, Prof Okoh was part of the South Africa delegation to Oman on the Oman-South Africa bilateral cooperation Workshop on Water & Agri-biotechnology. He also served as a member of the South Africa National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) discussion forum on Water Management and Skills. He has published over 340 journal articles and graduated 46 PhD and 60 Master’s degree students. He is a recipient of the UFH Vice-Chancellor Emerging Researcher Award; the Vice-Chancellor Senior Researcher Medal; and Achievers Award of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria. Prof Okoh also served as President of the South Africa Society for Microbiology (2011-2013). He is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF); Fellow of the Water Institute of Southern Africa; Fellow of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria; and Fellow of the prestigious African Academy of Sciences (AAS). He is an NRF C1 rated researcher and currently has an h-index of 41 and i-10 index of 154.
