Prof Hemmings is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and currently leads the Psychiatric Genetics Research Group, the only dedicated neuropsychiatric genetics laboratory in South Africa. She directs molecular-based research into posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and supervises several postgraduate students. Prof Hemmings is recognised nationally and is gaining international recognition for her work investigating the molecular aetiology of PTSD and related disorders. She is currently an NRF C1 rated researcher, co-author of 93 publications (41 published in the previous 5 years) and has a Scopus H-index of 33. From the inception of the SAMRC/SU Genomics of Brain Disorders Research Unit, Prof Hemmings has assisted with the management and leadership of the Unit including but not limited to the Unit’s administrative tasks. She has also been PI and co-I of numerous successful grant applications, which have contributed to both income generation and protocol development in the Unit.
