9th Southern Africa Malaria Research Conference

Malaria Conference

#About the Conference

Why you should attend the  Malaria Research Conference

The South African Medical Research Council Malaria Research Group (MRG) seeks to improve the health and quality of life of people living in malaria endemic areas by facilitating high quality scientific research that informs the development of policy, health services, health promotion and capacity development. In consultation with the SA National Department of Health the OMR developed a prioritised research agenda to foster networking and collaboration among different role players to synergise efforts on malaria research towards a common goal. In light of this it was decided to host the first malaria research conference in 2015 which has now become an annual event.

The 2024 conference will be held from the 31 July - 2 August 2024 at the Future Africa Campus, University of Pretoria. This initiative of the MRG creates a platform for experienced and emerging scientists to showcase their work as well as the opportunity to network with the wider malaria community in the region.

With the goal of malaria elimination now being moved to 2030 it has become apparent that many southern African countries are experiencing challenges in attaining their goal. Cross border transmission, lack of resources and insecticide resistance are only a few of the difficulties being experienced by malaria control programmes. Therefore, the theme for the 2024 conference is “Malaria Elimination: A moving target? "
