International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week: 20 – 26 October 2024

International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week aims to raise awareness about the serious health impacts of lead exposure, particularly in children. This initiative highlights the efforts of countries and partners working to prevent childhood lead exposure, for example acceleration of global initiatives to phase out the use of lead in paint.

Despite widespread recognition of the harmful effects of lead, many communities still face significant risks from multiple sources. Lead exposure can result in serious health issues, including developmental delays, cognitive impairments, and various physical health problems. Although numerous countries have implemented measures to combat lead exposure, it remains a pressing concern for healthcare providers and public health officials worldwide, especially in poorly resourced countries.

During this week, organisations and advocates will come together to promote educational campaigns, share best practices, and encourage policymakers to strengthen regulations against lead use. Together, we can work towards a future where children are protected from the dangers of lead exposure.
