Call for Nominations for Members of the Board of the South African Medical Research Council

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is established in terms of the South African Medical Research Council Act, 1991 (Act No. 58 of 1991) (hereafter referred to as the Act). SAMRC is a Schedule 3A public entity reporting to the Ministry of Health and is mandated, through research, development and technology transfer, to promote the improvement of the health and quality of life of the population of the Republic, and to perform such functions as may be assigned under the Act.

The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. PA Motsoaledi, invites the public to submit nominations of candidates to be considered for appointment to the Board of the SAMRC for a period of three (3) years, effective from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2028 as follows: • A Chairperson, Not less than twelve (12) and not more than fourteen (14) members who have distinguished themselves in any branch of the Medical or related Sciences • One (1) candidate with extensive knowledge of law • One (1) candidate with extensive knowledge of economics, financial matters or accounting.

Nominated candidates should have appropriate qualifications, expertise, knowledge, and substantial experience in the category/field of nomination. Visionaries, who are able to formulate and implement strategy, define policies and priorities consistent with the developmental health agenda of the Government, who are committed to the principles of good corporate governance, and have knowledge of risk management, financial management, project management and the business of the SAMRC, are encouraged to apply.

Remuneration: Remuneration for Board meetings is set at the level prescribed by the National Treasury. SAMRC has been classified under Category B, subcategory B1 of the Service Benefits Packages for Office-Bearers of statutory and other institutions. Employees of National, Provincial, and Local Government, government agencies or entities, appointed as members on the SAMRC Board, are not entitled to additional remuneration without prior approval, and will not be remunerated for their service as members of the Board.

Requirements of a valid nomination: Nominations must be made on a nomination form obtainable from the Department of Health’s website at www.health.gov.za under VACANCIES or from the SAMRC website at www.samrc.ac.za. A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the nominee should be attached, including certified copies of academic qualifications and supporting information.

Submission of nominations: Nominations should be addressed to the Director-General, Department of Health, and marked for the attention of the Director: Public Entities Governance and submitted via email to nominations@health.gov.za by no later than 16h00 on Friday, 25 July 2025.
