The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is established in terms of the South African Medical Research Council Act, 1991 (Act No. 58 of 1991) (hereafter referred as the Act). SAMRC is a Schedule 3A public entity reporting to the Ministry of Health, and is mandated, through research, development and technology transfer, to promote the improvement of the health and quality of life of the population of the Republic, and to perform such functions as maybe assigned under the Act.
Section 6 of the Act provides that the affairs of the SAMRC shall be managed and controlled by a Board, which shall, subject to the provisions of the Act, determine the policy and objectives of the SAMRC and exercise control generally over the performance of its functions, the exercise of its powers and the execution of its duties.
The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr MJ Phaahla, invites the public to submit nominations of the following candidates to be considered for appointment to the Board of the SAMRC for a period of three (3) years, effective from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2025:
- Fourteen candidates who have distinguished themselves in any branch of the Medical or related Sciences;
- One candidate with extensive knowledge in law; and
- One candidate with extensive knowledge in economics, financial matters or accounting.
Each nomination must be submitted on a separate form. (Nomination Form) - Please ensure that the required supporting documentation is attached, as specified in the Government Gazette notice.
Incomplete forms may be considered ineligible for assessment.
Nominations should be addressed to the Director-General, Department of Health, and marked for the attention of the Director: Public Entities Governance and submitted via email to paul.tsebe@health.gov.za. By no later than 16h00.
