Our organisation, in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department, hosted ten Grade 11 boys from different schools in the Cape Metropolitan area at the Old Main Groote Schuur Hospital in commemoration of Professor Ntobeko Ntusi’s 1 year in office as President & CEO of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC).
Central to the session was the inspirational story of Prof Ntusi, an accomplished clinician-scientist and respected leader in cardiovascular medicine. He shared his personal path, reflecting on his upbringing in the Eastern Cape, his pursuit of a liberal arts education degree in the United States, and his return to South Africa to study medicine at the University of Cape Town. His journey demonstrated that the choices young people make today directly influence the opportunities they unlock tomorrow.
Learners also had the opportunity to interact with medical specialists across disciplines, including radiology and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. These engagements offered valuable insights into the diverse careers within the medical field, reinforcing that the sector demands not only academic excellence but also passion, perseverance, and a commitment to service.
The initiative served as a platform to affirm the importance of investing time, mentorship, and knowledge into the boy child. Encouraging young men to pursue meaningful careers and equipping them with strong role models contributes to building a future generation of professionals who are compassionate, accountable, and driven to make a positive impact.
