Daniel du Toit was Professor and the Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Tshwane University of Technology.  He is in possession of a PhD in Physiology (Human Reproduction) and has been head of this department since 1997 until he retired in 2018.  Daniel has been appointed on various Committees by the Minister of Health in the past 15 years.  He was the chairperson of the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) Ethics Committee and Animal Ethics Committee from 2002 to 2016.  He was reappointed as Chair of the HREC (SAMRC) from 2018 and is still Chairing this committee.  He was also a member of the MRC Ethics Committee and Animal Ethics Committee from 1998 to 2002.  He was appointed as chairperson of the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) since 2006 until August 2016.  He served on the Board of the MRC from 1998 till 2003 and again from 2008 till 2010.  Daniel also serves as a Board Member of the African Clinical Research Organization (ACRO) and chair the Ethics and Social Committee of ACRO. He studied ethics at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities in the United States of America and attended the IRENSA course at the Bio-Ethics Centre of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cape Town.  Daniel was appointed to a task team by ASSAF to investigate the status of Biosafety and Biosecurity in South Africa.  A document to this regard has been launched by ASSAF.  He has published 45 papers in national and international accredited journals and presented more than 161 papers and posters on national and international level. He delivered various papers nationally and international as invited speaker with specific reference to Ethics governance in South Africa.
