Request for Applications: Treatments and Adherence to Treatment protocols

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is pleased to announce the launch of the 1st Joint Transnational Call for proposals under the European Partnership on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance (EUP OHAMR). The call aims to develop innovative, cost-effective treatment options for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This is an international call for proposals co-funded by the European Union and 37 national and regional funding organisations from 28 countries, with an estimated total call budget of over 31 million Euro.

Research and innovation proposals addressing the following topics are invited:  
  • Topic 1: Identify and develop new combination treatments using existing or innovative antimicrobials or antimicrobial with adjunctive treatments to extend drug efficacy and combat resistance
  • Topic 2: Develop tools and methods to improve adherence to treatment protocols
  • Topic 3: Assess the impact of antimicrobials for veterinary and agricultural use on the risk of AMR transmission to humans and the environment to inform policies on the restriction of some antimicrobials for human use

Successful South African applicants will be funded through the Strategic Health Innovation Partnerships (SHIP) programme, an initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the SAMRC.

Funding Level: 

SHIP has committed 250 000 Euro to support 1 – 2 projects through this call.

Geography and Eligibility:

  • Only transnational research and innovation projects will be supported, and an online partner search tool is available.
  • Investigators employed at eligible institutions in South Africa, and that are either citizens or permanent residents, are eligible to apply as lead applicants or co-applicants.
  • South African research institutions eligible as leading institutions include universities, science councils and other legally constituted institutions or organisations wherein research is one of the primary purposes for their existence.

Application Submission

All applications must be submitted to the EUP OHAMR submission platform and follow the EUP OHAMR pre-proposal/full proposal template, which is available at https://ptoutline.eu/app/OHAMR2026_OH-TREAT. Submissions via email or any other method will not be accepted.
