NSTF-South32 Awards names eminent SAMRC intramural and extramural scientists as finalists

NSTF finalistsCape Town, South Africa | Recognising outstanding contributions to science, technology, innovation, and engineering in South Africa is one of the meaningful roles held by the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF). As a salute and support of this work the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) joined the league of sponsors and partners to the well acclaimed event in 2023.

We are pleased to announce that four SAMRC scientists have been named as finalists in the awards. Receiving news of being an Award finalist particularly for the NSTF-South32 is an immense honour. The calibre, and number of nominations received makes for a tight competition and concurrently aids in building continued interest from the community annually.

The awards comprise of 14 categories, with the 14th category being a Lifetime Award. Prof Shabir Madhi, Director of the SAMRC/Wits Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (VIDA) won in this category in 2022. This year, SAMRC yet again marks it’s excellence, commitment and dedication with our scientists featuring in five categories:

The award categories

TW Kambule-NSTF Award: Researcher

  • Prof Marlo Möller – Professor: Centre for Tuberculosis Research, SAMRC

TW Kambule-NSTF Award: Emerging Researcher

  • Dr Terusha Chetty – Specialist Clinician Scientist: HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Research Unit, SAMRC; and also in the Clinician-Scientist category*.

Data for Research Award

  • Prof Karen I Barnes – Founding Director: UCT/SAMRC Collaborating Centre for Optimising Antimalarial Therapy.

NSTF-SAMRC Clinician-Scientist

  • Dr Terusha Chetty – Specialist Clinician Scientist: HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Research Unit, SAMRC.

Communication Award

  • Prof Refilwe Nancy Phaswana-Mafuya – Director: SAMRC/ UJ Pan African Centre for Epidemics Research Unit.
