South African Medical Research Council welcomes new President and CEO

Prof NtusiThe Board of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and its staff are excited to welcome Professor Ntobeko Ntusi as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the SAMRC. Professor Ntusi will officially assume his role on Monday, 1 July 2024, taking over from Professor Glenda Gray, who spent ten remarkable years as the President and CEO of the SAMRC.

Professor Ntusi is a distinguished scholar and leader in the medical research community. He has an impressive track record of contributions to medical science, health research, and public health. His expertise and vision are expected to steer SAMRC towards new heights of innovation and impact in the healthcare sector.

Professor Ntusi’s leadership spans various national, regional, and international platforms, where he has played pivotal roles in shaping academic agendas and postgraduate medical education standards and advancing key national strategic priorities. His commitment to mentoring young professionals and supervising postgraduate students underscores his passion for nurturing the next generation of medical leaders, instilling hope for the future of medical leadership.

Professor Ntusi, a physician and cardiologist, holds numerous additional qualifications, including a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Cardiovascular Medicine and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Cardiology from the University of Oxford, St. Cross College, and the University of Cape Town. These qualifications, along with his extensive experience, make him a prominent figure in the medical field. His vision for the SAMRC aligns with its commitment to advancing medical research and improving health outcomes for all.

At the same time, we extend our deepest gratitude to Professor Gray for her sterling work and dedication over the past decade.”

Professor Ntusi expressed his enthusiasm about joining SAMRC, stating, “I am honoured to take on this role and look forward to working with our partners and talented team at SAMRC. Together, we will strive to make significant advancements in health research and address the pressing health challenges facing our nation. I would also like to thank my predecessor, Professor Gray, as I carry on from the excellent work she has done at the SAMRC.”
