Bridging research and reality: Lessons learnt from the KZN PHCTC as a governance model for Universal Health Coverage: Zamasomi Luvuno

How do we turn the principles of Community-Oriented Primary Health Care (COPC) into a functional reality? This discussion will examine the development of the KwaZulu-Natal Primary Health Care Transformation Committee (PHCTC), a structure built on the belief that health transformation towards UHC, requires collective intelligence. By utilising a shared Theory of Change, we will examine how the PHCTC creates space for multi-level planning and the scaling of evidence-based innovations.

Rapidly expanding coverage of care for children and adults with cerebral palsy in rural KZN

Improving initial access to rehabilitation services and retention in care for children and adults with moderate and severe disabilities in rural areas poses unique challenges around affordability, acceptability, and accessibility - challenges which drive inequality and are perpetuated by our own health systems. In this webinar, Maryke described how rehabilitation systems and service reforms, initially driven by COVID-19, produced surprising results that have become ‘business as usual’ for the Manguzi team in rural KwaZulu Natal.

Introduction

In South Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are at high risk of HIV infection, and there has been insufficient progress in preventing HIV infection among this population. Multiple factors intersect to increase AGYW’s risk of HIV, these include, but are not limited to gender inequalities, age-disparate relationships, gender- based violence (GBV), low levels of education, lack of access to adequate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and stigma and discrimination.

  • In response to the persistently high HIV prevalence among South African adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), HIV prevention programmes have prioritised providing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to this population.

They shared the methods from our priority-setting exercise for developing health system governance research questions for South Africa within the context of UHC.

Using implementation science embedded within a learning health systems approach to scale up integrated primary mental health care in real world primary health care in KwaZulu-Natal

In this webinar, Prof. Bhana focused on the challenges associated with integrating task sharing of mental health treatment in real-world settings. He discussed the use of implementation science frameworks supported by learning health collaboratives as a primary mechanism of change, drawing lessons for implementation of UHC.

  • Poor mental health, including high levels of stress, is associated with increased risk behaviours resulting in negative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes amongst adolescent girls and young women (AGYW)
  • We explored South African AGYW’s narratives of stressors,  coping strategies, and impacts of participating in an intervention on mental well-being.
  • We found intersecting factors across individual, interpersonal, microlevel and structural levels that are salient mental health stressors experienced

SAMRC UHC / NHI webinar: Healthcare workers’ and managers’ uses of mobile phone messaging applications in their daily work in South Africa: a mixed method study

In this webinar, Prof. Doherty presented and discussed findings from a research study undertaken in Gauteng and the Free State to explore the extent and purposes for which healthcare workers use messaging apps in their daily work. She also reflected on the benefits and challenges to this use and current policy gaps.

Global Evidence, Local Adaptation (GELA) Project – advancing methods for guideline adaptation in Malawi, Nigeria, and South Africa

A collaborative project between South Africa, Norway, Malawi and Nigeria was undertaken to help strengthen national health evidence systems, using lessons from global evidence to adapt treatment and care to adequately serve the needs of local populations.
