Education
PhD: Infectious Diseases and Immunology (Medical Sciences)

Dr Nasiema Allie obtained her tertiary education at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Her doctoral dissertation focused on cell specific Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF) and the role of the cytokine in the host’s immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection in an experimental cell specific macrophage and CD4 and CD8 T cell knockout mouse model.

In 1998 she started as a Research Assistant at the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) obtaining skills such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay, western blots, and cell culture to determine whether the levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI1), an enzyme in blood, correlate with the presence of metastatic disease for patients with melanoma. She further developed her medical scientific career in joining the immunology and infectious diseases research group in 1999 at UCT and further mastered breeding and maintenance of genetically modified (GMO) mouse colonies, experimental mouse models in infectious diseases, biosafety level three (BSL3) management and Mycobacteria tuberculosis infections. In 2013 she joined the University of the Western Cape (UWC) as an Academic Coordinator in the Division of Postgraduate Studies (DPGS) to administrate and organize and provide instructional research capacity support to postgraduates to ensure completion of their postgraduate degrees. In 2016 she joined the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Tygerberg campus as a senior scientist and biosafety level three (BSL3) in the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics (MBHG) to ensure compliance of the containment facility, and staff and postgraduate student training. She is currently at the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) within the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform (BRIP) as a project manager.
