Research focus: Cardio-oncology and cardiometabolic disorders

My research investigates the mechanistic overlap between chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity and diabetic cardiomyopathy, specifically addressing the escalating burden of non-communicable diseases in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. By exploring how metabolic dysregulation and oncological interventions converge to induce heart disease, I employ a bench-to-bedside approach that spans in vitro mechanistic studies, preclinical animal models, and clinical biomarker validation. Ultimately, this work aims to translate foundational science into therapeutic discoveries that mitigate cardiovascular morbidity in populations uniquely affected by the dual burden of cancer and diabetes.
