
Research focus: Cardio metabolism group
Current research/role focus: As a post-doc fellow, her Research focus is exploring the genetic risk profile of cardio metabolic diseases among patient living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). She is also involved in SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance in the cape metropole.
Biography:
Dr Samukelisiwe Shabalala is a post-doctoral fellow at south African medical research council in collaboration with Water Sisulu University. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from university of Zululand. In her Ph.D. project, she investigated the effect of obesogenic diets on gene expression and DNA methylation signatures associated with adiponectin signaling in the liver of wistar rats. Dr Shabalala has published 6 peer reviewed articles, three of which she first authored. She has mentored post-graduate students (honors and master’s).
