Chané Buys joined the Mental Health, Alcohol, Substance Use and Tobacco Research Unit as a field site supervisor in November 2021. Previously, she worked at the University of Pretoria, Wits Health Consortium and is a registered medical scientist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She has been involved in research studies focused on antimicrobial resistance surveillance in bacterial pathogens and optimizing novel diagnostic methods for COVID-19. Chané is currently responsible for the project coordination and management of field staff on Project TRUST, a study focusing on the impact of alcohol and substance usage on TB treatment outcome. She is completing her MSc degree in Medical Microbiology at the University of Pretoria and has presented her work at national and international conferences. She has also completed the Management Development Programme with Regent Business College and hopes to pursue an MBA degree in future.
