Dr. Tromp is a highly published (>240 publications) and rated bioinformatician (h-index of 76) who started out as a bench scientist in biochemistry and molecular biology of disease in extracellular matrix. During his doctoral studies he developed computational skills and gradually drifted into what has become the discipline of bioinformatics. During the course of his career, he became proficient at genetics, statistical genetics and medical informatics. Dr. Tromp came to Stellenbosch in 2015 after 33 years in the United States to take up the Research Chair in Bioinformatics at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Since then, he has helped establish an active group in Bioinformatics at the Faculty and has also contributed to the establishment of a training programme in Bioinformatics at Centre for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Stellenbosch University.
