After qualifying as a medical practitioner at the University of Cape Town, Prof Dhansay obtained specialist degrees in Paediatrics at Stellenbosch University and the Colleges of Medicine.  His research career started in 1986 when awarded an MRC post-specialisation research scholarship.  He has played a major role in introducing clinical expertise, mentorship, and support to various projects, including SAHNHANES and SADHS 2016. His main research interests are child health and public health nutrition; and he has a special interest in research integrity, ethics and human rights.
