Prof Tamara Kredo holds the position of Unit Director of the Health Systems Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council. She is an expert in health policy and clinical guidelines methods. She trained as a medical doctor, specialising in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Cape Town. Tamara is committed to credible, transparent evidence-informed healthcare decision-making. Her research spans assessing the quality, and content and methods of clinical practice guidelines in Southern Africa and globally. Her recent highlights include leading the conduct of methods development and rapid reviews on essential medicines and vaccines for the national COVID-19 guidelines.

In her previous role at Cochrane South Africa, Tamara has fulfilled leadership roles at Cochrane South Africa since 2010 as Deputy Director of the Centre and, since 2017, founding and co-directing Cochrane Africa, which aims to expand Cochrane’s work in sub Saharan Africa. Among many highlights she is co-lead of the SA GRADE Network; consults to WHO as a guideline methodologist; was a member of the Centre Directors Executive (now Geographic Groups); was a co-opted Trustee of the Guidelines International Network Governing Board; and in 2020 was elected to the Cochrane Board. She has also held leadership positions in many strategic and advisory committees including serving as the organising committee chair for the Global Evidence Summit in 2017, as well as several other international conferences.
