Report on Weekly Deaths in South Africa
Monthly reporting of weekly deaths
Estimated numbers of weekly deaths are reported monthly against the predicted numbers.
The number of deaths is based on deaths recorded on the National Population Register that are shared with the SAMRC on a weekly basis. Adjustments are made for the number of deaths of people who are not on the National Population Register as well as those deaths that have not been registered with the Department of Home Affairs.
The predicted numbers of weekly deaths have been calculated using the trend in mortality rates from the pre-COVID period combined with data from the post-COVID periods. The trend models are based on data for the period 2015-2019 and 2023-2024 and in the case of natural causes, have allowed for different time trends by age group within each province. The trend model for unnatural deaths has allowed for different mortality rates by age, sex and province.
